Quarry Farm Fellowships

The Elmira College Center for Mark Twain Studies offers fellowships-in-residence to scholars pursuing research and/or writing in the field of Mark Twain Studies. The Quarry Farm Fellowship program provides free lodging for periods of two weeks to two months at Quarry Farm, where Mark Twain resided and wrote over the course of twenty summers throughout the 1870’s and 1880’s.

Quarry Farm Fellows have access to the John S. Tuckey Collection of more than two hundred and fifty standard scholarly titles shelved on the premises, and the extensive Michael J. Kiskis Collection also shelved at Quarry Farm, as well as the Mark Twain Archive located in the Gannett-Tripp Library on Elmira College’s nearby campus.

Application Requirements:

  1. Cover Letter addressed to Director Joe Lemak specifying the nature of the applicant’s project.
  2. Curriculum Vitae / Resume
  3. Two letters from references familiar with the applicant’s project and scholarly work, forwarded directly to the Director of the Center.
  4. At least two sets of potential dates for the proposed visit.

Facts pertinent to Quarry Farm Fellowships

  • Quarry Farm Fellows have access to a fully equipped kitchen and laundry, but they are responsible for providing their own food and preparing their meals. On campus meal plans can be arranged with the College’s dining service. Linen is provided, but laundry supplies are not. An automobile is desirable, as Quarry Farm is located three miles from the campus. Please notify the Center if assistance with transportation is needed.
  • The upstairs level of the main house at Quarry Farm includes five bedrooms, three baths, and two study areas. Quarry Farm may accommodate more than one Quarry Farm Fellow at a time. Only immediate family members may accompany Quarry Farm Fellows and then only by pre-arrangement with the Director.
  • The Center reserves the right to make occasional use of the lower floor, but the Quarry Farm Fellow is assured of privacy on the second level.
  • Full-time caretakers are on the premises in a separate living unit adjacent to the main residence.
